Racial Resentment and Attitudes Toward the Use of Force by Police: An Over-Time Trend Analysis Racial Resentment and Attitudes Toward the Use of Force by Police: An Over-Time Trend Analysis Mean Police Force Index Scores by Each Level of Racial Resentment Mean Police Force Index Scores by Each Level of Racial Resentment Overall, and consistent with past research assessing the role of racial resentment on law enforcement and punishment, findings reveal that the impact of racial resentment on white attitudes toward the use of force by the police toward citizens is real. Findings also demonstrate that over time the impact of racial resentment has been quite significant and consistent over time. Put another way, racial resentment has in the past and continues in the present to play a strong role in affecting whites' attitudes toward the use of force toward citizens by the police. Indeed, very little shift was observed across the time periods as the racial resentment index was significant in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
